Okay so you want to try diving but you’re not ready to commit to a full certification course. That’s a completely reasonable position, and this tour is built exactly for it. The Discover Scuba Diving program out of Koh Samui isn’t a gimmick — it’s an actual PADI-structured experience that counts toward your Open Water certification if you decide to go further later. Two dives, a qualified instructor, and you’re at Koh Tao, which is one of the best dive sites in Southeast Asia. Honestly, worse ways to spend a Tuesday.
Here’s what’s actually involved.
This is not a certification course. You will not walk away with a PADI card. What you will do is complete the standard introductory dive program — brief classroom session, shallow-water skills practice, then two actual dives in open water at Koh Tao or Koh Nangyuan. If you later decide to do the full Open Water certification, these dives can be credited toward that.
The instructor handles everything — briefing, gear setup, staying close underwater. Your job is to remember to breathe through your mouth and not panic, which sounds simple and mostly is. The team has been running this program for over fourteen years and has a clean safety record, which matters more than it sounds when you’re deciding who to trust underwater.
Koh Tao is about 80 kilometers north of Koh Samui, and it’s the dive capital of the Gulf of Thailand. The sites around Koh Tao and Koh Nangyuan are genuinely excellent — visibility is usually good, there’s plenty of marine life, and the depths are appropriate for beginners. Which sites you hit on a given day depends on conditions and the group’s experience level, so the exact spots aren’t guaranteed, but the general quality is consistent.
Koh Nangyuan is the small island trio connected by sandbars just northwest of Koh Tao. It’s picturesque above water and interesting below it — the kind of place that looks like a screensaver. If you end up diving there, consider yourself lucky.
Round-trip transfer from your Koh Samui hotel is included. The journey to Koh Tao takes time — you’re on a boat for a couple of hours each way — so this is genuinely a full-day commitment. Departure is early. Bring seasickness medication if you’re prone; the Gulf can have some chop.
Lunch and bottled water are included. All diving equipment is provided. Your instructor can conduct the briefing in English, German, French, Chinese, Italian, Japanese, or Thai, which is unusually good coverage.
This tour runs Monday, Wednesday, and Friday only. Check the schedule against your stay — if you’ve only got two or three days on Samui, you might need to plan around this.
Minimum age is 13. There’s no upper age limit, but there are health restrictions that the operator takes seriously. If you have a history of heart conditions, epilepsy, asthma, or any significant respiratory issues, you won’t be cleared to dive. Everyone fills out a medical questionnaire before the course — this isn’t box-ticking, it’s a safety requirement.
Also: don’t plan to fly within 48 hours of diving. That’s standard dive medicine, not this operator being cautious. If your flight home is tomorrow night, skip the diving today.
At $237 per person, this is one of the more expensive single-day activities out of Koh Samui. But it includes the boat transfer to Koh Tao and back, two actual dives with professional instruction, all gear, and lunch — not a bad deal when you break it down. Koh Tao is famous for being one of the cheapest places in the world to get a dive certification precisely because there’s so much competition, but the convenience of departing from Samui and having everything arranged is worth something.
