Alright, I’m going to cut to the main thing here: this trip goes to two of the best snorkeling spots in the Gulf of Thailand in one day, leaves from either Koh Samui or Koh Phangan, includes breakfast and lunch, and the boat is a powered catamaran rather than a speedboat. That last part matters more than people give it credit for.
The route — Koh Tao and Koh Nangyuan on the same day — is a proper day out. These are not interchangeable with whatever reef you could snorkel off the back of a longtail from Chaweng. Koh Tao is the dive capital of the Gulf of Thailand for a reason. Koh Nangyuan is the small triple-island cluster just northwest of Koh Tao, connected by sandbars, and it looks absurdly photogenic from the water. The snorkeling at both is consistently good.
Speedboats are fast and loud and they bounce. If you’ve ever arrived at a snorkel site already queasy and exhausted from a boat ride, you know the problem. A powered catamaran is significantly more stable — the twin-hull design reduces rolling, the ride is smoother, and you arrive at the first stop actually ready to get in the water.
The tradeoff is that it takes slightly longer to get there, but on a full-day trip that’s not really a concern. You have the time.
Hotel pickup is included from Koh Samui or Koh Phangan. You get a light breakfast at the pier before departure. The catamaran heads north to Koh Tao and Koh Nangyuan, where you’ll have 90 minutes at each island — enough time to explore properly rather than rushing back to the boat. Local guides who know the specific sites get in the water with you. Snorkel gear is provided.
Lunch is included on Koh Tao, along with beverages throughout the day. Departure is around 7:30 AM, and the whole trip runs approximately seven and a half hours.
One thing to know upfront: there’s a national park admission fee of 250 THB per person (roughly $7) that isn’t included in the tour price and you pay separately on arrival. Worth knowing so you’re not caught out.
Koh Nangyuan deserves its own paragraph. It’s three small peaks connected at the base by sandbars that shift with the tide — at low tide you can walk between them on dry sand, at high tide they’re underwater. The snorkeling on the reef between the islands is excellent, and the viewpoint on the main peak is one of the better ones in the Gulf if you’re up for the climb.
Day-trippers from Koh Tao come here, but arriving by catamaran from Samui with a private guide means you’re not dependent on Koh Tao’s ferry schedule or tour operators.
Anyone who wants a proper full-day snorkel trip without the discomfort of a fast speedboat crossing. It’s good for families — suitable for all fitness levels, and the catamaran is stable enough that kids aren’t getting bounced around. Pregnant travelers are advised against it. The snorkeling is shallow enough for confident beginners but interesting enough that more experienced swimmers won’t be bored.
At $71 per person with meals, snorkel gear, and hotel transfers included, this is one of the better-value day trips available out of Koh Samui. The main comparable options either cost more or don’t go to both islands.
