Overview

Sail Rock Scuba Diving Day Trip from Koh Phangan Overview

Sail Rock is one of those dive sites that gets talked about constantly in Southeast Asia dive circles — and for good reason. Rising from 40 metres to just a few metres below the surface, this underwater pinnacle sits roughly 15km northeast of Koh Phangan in the Gulf of Thailand, and it sees some genuinely impressive marine life.

This isn’t a beginner tour. It’s for **certified divers only**, and that’s what makes it special. No hand-holding, no massive groups, no shallow coral gardens. You’re here for two real dives at a world-class site.

**What makes Sail Rock different:**

The headline feature is the **vertical chimney** — a narrow passage that cuts straight through the rock from about 18m to 5m. Swimming through it while you look up at the light filtering down is one of the more memorable dive experiences you’ll have in Thailand. Outside the chimney, the site is thick with marine life: chevron barracuda in schools, giant grouper, moray eels, and seasonally (Nov–Apr especially) **whale sharks** that cruise the deeper areas.

The current can run at Sail Rock, which is actually part of what makes it so good — nutrients in the water attract big pelagics. The dive guides here know the site inside out and position you well.

**What’s included:** Two full dives with all equipment, a dive guide, breakfast before departure, lunch on the boat, fresh fruit, coffee, tea, and soft drinks throughout. Resort pickups are included from most Koh Phangan locations — if you’re staying in Thong Nai Pan you’ll pay an extra taxi fee, and transfers from Haad Yuan or Haad Tien aren’t available.

**Practical stuff:** Certified divers only — bring your certification card. Departure is around 8 AM and you’re back mid-afternoon. Snorkelers are not accommodated on this trip. If you haven’t dived in a while, a refresher dive at a local dive shop the evening before is a good idea. The boat ride to Sail Rock takes about 45 minutes each way.

What to Expect on this Tour

DIVE THE VERTICAL CHIMNEY

Sail Rock's famous chimney is a narrow passage cutting straight through the pinnacle from 18m to 5m. Swimming through it with light filtering down from above is genuinely spectacular. The dive guide leads the way and times it perfectly.

WHALE SHARK TERRITORY

Sail Rock has consistent whale shark sightings, especially between November and April. There are no guarantees with any wildlife encounter, but this is one of the most reliable spots in the Gulf of Thailand. Keep your eyes on the blue water.

TWO FULL DIVES INCLUDED

Your package includes two proper dives at Sail Rock, not one quick look and done. All equipment is included — BCD, regulator, wetsuit, tank. Just bring your certification card and a sense of adventure.

FULL MEALS ON BOARD

Breakfast before you dive, lunch between dives, fresh fruit, and unlimited coffee, tea, and soft drinks throughout the day. The boat crew takes food seriously — it's not just a packed biscuit and water.
